Study outlines urgency to increase culturally-appropriate secured housing options for Chinatown seniors

Vancouver, BC – The results of a comprehensive study aimed at providing insight into the current housing situations and challenges facing seniors living in and around Vancouver’s Chinatown will be made public at a news conference.

DATE: Wednesday, January 25, 2023

TIME: 10:30 a.m.

LOCATION: S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Head Office, Choi Hall, 28 W Pender Street, Vancouver

The Vancouver Chinatown Affordable Seniors Housing Inventory Report takes stock of affordable housing supply within Chinatown, Strathcona and the Downtown Eastside and focuses on non-market housing units and Single Room Occupancy rooms (SROs) as affordable housing supply.

The study also offers recommendations and proposed actions to address the severe shortage of culturally-appropriate housing options for seniors in Chinatown and its vicinity.

The community-led research project was initiated to address the precarity of seniors housing especially following the 2021 purchase of the Vancouver Grace Seniors Home at 333 East Pender by the Province of British Columbia to safeguard the facility for the 70 residents who were at risk of being evicted.

The Inventory was commissioned by Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association (CSHBA) and the Housing Working Group under the Chinatown Legacy Stewardship Group (LSG).
