Six Vancouver mayoral candidates attend public townhall organized by S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and CIJA

September 23, 2018 – Vancouver, BC – S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) hosted a public pre-election townhall today with six Vancouver mayoral candidates to discuss a variety of important topics.
Mayoral candidates who were present were Hector Bremner, David Chen, Ken Sim, Kennedy Stewart, Shauna Sylvester and Wai Young. The townhall drew close to 150 people to attend. The session was moderated by Jody Vance.
“Promoting civic participation is one of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s mandates,” said Queenie Choo, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. “We believe it’s important to engage our diverse community stakeholders and provide as many opportunities as possible for the public to hear from candidates who are running for such an important office. It was a pleasure to co-host the townhall with longtime partner CIJA since we share many of the same priorities.”
Candidates were asked to address questions submitted by the public ahead of the townhall relating to the seven topics pre-selected by the event co-organizers. The session was delivered in English and simultaneous interpretation to Cantonese and Mandarin was provided.
“We wanted to find topics that were of relevance and concern for both sets of constituents,” said Nico Slobinsky, Director of CIJA Pacific Region. “The townhall allowed our respective communities to hear from its potential leaders for Mayor and learn about their views on access to culturally sensitive services; affordability; community security; transportation and accessibility; inclusion; immigration; and the delivery of cultural appropriate care for seniors. We were delighted to once again partner with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to bring this important forum into the community.”
