S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Celebration of Life for co-founder Maggie Ip draws community together

Vancouver, BC – Friends, family and former colleagues of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. co-founder Maggie Ip gathered to share an outpouring of respect for a remarkable woman who passed away in October.

A Celebration of Life for Maggie Ip was held on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at Choi Hall in Chinatown. A packed room of family, friends, former colleagues, community and government leaders and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. staff gathered to pay tribute to her vision and dedication to the cause of helping newcomers settle in Canada.

Maggie Ip was among the original group of volunteers who founded S.U.C.C.E.S.S. more than 50 years ago in 1973. She was a dedicated and passionate leader who made significant contributions to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and the communities we serve over her decades of devoted service.

Her Celebration of Life included speakers from the Ip family, former S.U.C.C.E.S.S. leaders and community leaders, plus musical and video tributes, followed by refreshments.

“Mom always encouraged us to see the bigger picture and taught us the value of family unity,” Maggie’s daughter Pam Ip told those gathered to honour her mother.

“Maggie is a visionary… and a dreamer. She must have dreamt of a better world which S.U.C.C.E.S.S. could help shape. To me, Maggie is the mother of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. ,” said past Board Chair Mason Loh.

“Maggie impressed me as a remarkable leader and true champion of S.U.C.C.E.S.S,” said S.U.C.C.E.S.S. CEO Queenie Choo. “I am grateful to have known her and I will carry her wisdom with me as I continue to serve and steward the agency that she worked so hard to build.”

Maggie Ip left an incredible mark on this city, this province, this county,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “She worked incredibly hard for what was right. We are literally standing on the shoulders of a giant.”

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. extends its deepest condolences to Maggie Ip’s family, friends and colleagues. Her legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched and the communities she served. In lieu of flowers, she asked those who wish to honor her consider making a donation to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. in her name at www.successfoundation.ca.

About Maggie Ip

Maggie Ip (February 19, 1943 – October 9, 2024) was born in Shanghai but moved to Canada to earn her Master’s in education from the University of Ottawa. In the late 1960s, she moved to Vancouver with her family and husband, Kelly Ip. As a full-time mother, Maggie Ip volunteered on the board of the YWCA, working mainly with new immigrants in the Strathcona and Chinatown area who were highly educated, such as lawyers, doctors, and professors. With a large number of immigrants coming from Hong Kong and not enough resources to aid everyone, she realized the urgent need in Vancouver to provide assistance to these individuals to help them adjust. Maggie Ip decided to found S.U.C.C.E.S.S., which today is the largest settlement service organization in Canada.
