Premier Horgan visits S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s culturally appropriate seniors care programs in Vancouver

Premier Horgan visits S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s culturally appropriate seniors care programs in Vancouver

September 22, 2018 – Vancouver, BC – Premier John Horgan, MLA Anne Kang, Parliamentary Secretary of State for Seniors, and members of the Chinese-Canadian Community Advisory Committee (CCCAC) toured the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Simon K.Y. Lee Seniors Care Home, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Chieng’s Adult Day Centre, and assisted living facility S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Harmony House in Vancouver today.
Led by S.U.C.C.E.S.S., the tour gave attendees an overview of the culturally appropriate care and services provided by the non-profit organization to seniors in different stages of aging. Culturally appropriate care recognizes the backgrounds of seniors and respects their wishes and needs. It includes, among other things, access to familiar language, food, celebratory events and recreational activities. The visit was prompted by a letter sent to the Premier’s office by the Asian Canadian Seniors Health Network (ACSHN), highlighting the needs of East Asian seniors in Metro Vancouver.
“Seniors should feel safe and cared-for in familiar surroundings,” said Premier John Horgan. “Our government is working with organizations like S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to provide seniors with health services that recognize and respect unique cultural backgrounds and language needs. We’re working together to deliver improved services for everyone in B.C., including working to expand the scope of services seniors need to live in dignity, at home, and in care facilities.”
Following the tour, Premier Horgan, Minister Katrina Chen, Minister George Chow, Minister Bruce Ralston, MLA Kang, and members of CCCAC and ACSHN engaged in a roundtable discussion.
“We’re honoured to have Premier Horgan visit our seniors care programs so that we can showcase the importance of culturally appropriate care to seniors’ health and well-being,” said Queenie Choo, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and co-chair of ACSHN. “We thank the provincial government for their attention to this issue, and look forward to working together to address the growing needs of our seniors population. We also hope that through this visit and roundtable, we can, together, commit to doing some important and meaningful work for seniors.”
