Annual Health Fair in Burnaby attracts more than 1,000 attendees

September 16, 2018 – Burnaby, BC – Organized by S.U.C.C.E.S.S., the Chinese Canadian Medical Society (BC) and the Chinese Canadian Dental Society of BC, with support from UBC’s InterCultural Online Health Network (iCON), the annual Health Fair came to a successful close in Burnaby today with 1,200 participants.
The goal of the Health Fair was to provide members of the public, particularly the Chinese-speaking community, with the latest information about health awareness, disease prevention and management, and healthy lifestyles.
Among the special guests in attendance at the event’s opening ceremony were Mayor Derek Corrigan; Anne Kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake and Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors; Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby Edmonds; Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North; and Burnaby City Councillor James Wang.
“I would like to thank our staff, volunteers, event sponsors and, particularly our partners – the Chinese Canadian Medical Society (BC) and the Chinese Canadian Dental Society of BC – for making the Health Fair possible,” said Queenie Choo, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. “I hope that through this event, the community was able to gain access to relevant information that benefits their overall health and well-being.”
This year’s Health Fair featured 12 talks in Cantonese and Mandarin on health and disease management topics, as well as 35 exhibition booths and free health tests and screenings for all attendees. It provided a valuable platform for local non-profit organizations, community groups and businesses to inform the public about the health resources and services that are available in the community. The event also helped to break language barriers for members of the Chinese-speaking community in accessing health-related information. While the seminars were delivered in Chinese, exhibits at the Fair provided information in both English and Chinese and all health screenings were available to members of the public.
