Free Community Fair to Provide Latest Information on Health and Oral Screening

Vancouver, BC – The annual Health Fair, jointly organized by S.U.C.C.E.S.S., the Chinese Canadian Medical Society BC (CCMS) and the Canadian Chinese Dental Society of BC (CCDS), will take place on Sunday, September 17, from 9:30 am to 4:15 pm at Bonsor Recreation Complex (6550 Bonsor Ave, Burnaby, BC). The event is free and will provide members of the public, especially the Chinese-speaking community, with the latest and relevant information about health awareness, disease prevention and treatment, and healthy lifestyles. The opening ceremony will begin at 11:30 am.
“We are thrilled that there will be more programs available and more new partners to support the event this year,” said Paul Cheng, co-chair of Health Fair 2017. “The event offers a platform for local non-profit organizations, community groups and businesses to inform fair visitors about health resources and services available in the community.”
Health Fair 2017 will feature health talks, screening and exhibition booths. A total of 14 lectures will be presented in Cantonese and Mandarin by physicians, dentists, physiotherapists and environmental health experts.
“As health and medical terms may be hard to understand, we want to break language barriers for members of the Chinese-speaking community.” said Dr. Brian Xinyong Wang, president of CCMS and co-chair of Health Fair 2017. “In addition to those popular topics such as fall prevention, cognitive impairment and dementia, back and joint pain, and gastrointestinal diseases, we will have new talks such as radon at home, to be presented by a representative from Health Canada.”
According to Dr. Jonathan Wu, director of CCDS, the Society will continue to promote oral care and oral health by presenting two talks and providing a free oral screening to attendees, a popular feature of the fair that had been well received in the past.
“Thanks to the hard work of our staff and volunteers and our continued partnership with the Canadian Medical Society BC and Canadian Chinese Dental Society of BC, the annual Health Fair has become an important community event that promotes population health and wellness,” said Queenie Choo, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. She also noted that while the seminars are delivered in Chinese, the exhibitions are available in both English and Chinese, and all can benefit from the event.
Health Fair 2017 is presented by Gilead Sciences Canada. The event is also supported by UBC InterCultural Online Health Network (iCON) and the City of Burnaby.
Since its inception in 1991, the annual Health Fair has hosted more than 300 seminars attended by 30,000 participants. Last year, the event drew more than 1,200 visitors from across Metro Vancouver.
