S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Simon K.Y. Lee Seniors Care Home (the “Care Home”), named in honour of its key supporter, Mr. Simon K.Y. Lee, is a multi-level care facility managed by S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Multi-Level Care Society. It began admitting its first residents on September 24, 2001
To be a center of excellence which provides integrated programs/services to complete the continuum of Health Services for the Seniors.
- To provide quality and holistic care/services that respect the unique traditional and cultural values of the Seniors we serve.
- To care for the seniors like our own; creating a home away from home.
- To bridge Seniors with the community.
The Care Home is located at 555 Carrall Street in Vancouver Chinatown, adjacent to the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Social Service Centre.
The Care Home, measuring 70,000 sq. ft., is a three-storey concrete building with five resident units – Pine Garden, Bamboo Garden, Cherry Garden, Birch Garden and Cedar Garden, and totalling 103 beds in private ensuites (93 single and 5 double rooms). A single room measures about 215 sq. ft. and double room, 356 sq. ft. Each resident unit is equipped with a spacious living room, dining room, activity room, bathroom and kitchenette.
There is also a garden, two quiet rooms, care stations, therapy rooms, a hairdressing saloon, a gift shop and an administration wing.
At the north end of the complex on the main level is The Chieng's Adult Day Centre. It contains a lounge, an activity area, a kitchen, a dining room, a meeting room and a quiet room.
Bi-lingual (English and Chinese) staff provides professional resident care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Twenty one beds are designated for cognitively impaired residents requiring special environmental adaptations. Others are for complex care residents.
The Chieng's Adult Day Centre started its operation in January 2003. This Centre provides health monitoring, therapeutic activities and social activities for seniors. Twenty or more seniors are being served each weekday. See below for further details.
The Care Home is open to any individual eligible for complex care services under The Ministry of Health Continuing Care Program.
The following registration procedures apply as required by Vancouver Coastal Health:
1. Contact the Continuing Care Unit in your area. (download community-health-area here)
2. Speak to the intake/liaison nurse at the unit.
3. The nurse would assess if the client is eligible for admission to a care home.
4. If eligible, a case manager would visit and confirm eligibility; and the client would then select a care home of his/her choice subject to availability.
There is a severe shortage of long term care beds in Vancouver. Seniors usually need to wait for up to two years and more for space in a care home.
The Province of British Columbia contributed $14.52 million for the construction of the Care Home, and the Vancouver Coastal Health funds its daily operation. S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Multi-Level Care Society raised $3 million to augment government funding for the construction cost of the Care Home.
